By the Way, Meet Vera Stark

Vera Stark, aspiring film actress, is determined and talented. The time is 1933, and the place is Hollywood, USA, and Vera is Black. What awaits this young, ambitious woman is a string of roles as slaves, maids, cooks, and mammies. Public recognition of her contribution to the arts emerges only after several decades in the business, when she is invited to appear on a popular TV talk show, and years later, when she becomes the subject of a movie retrospective and an academic symposium. This life story of an actress of color in America is bitter, but also wildly humorous – a full-blown satire that takes on old-time Hollywood, latter-day pop culture, and private and public hypocrisies. Playwright awarded Pulitzer Prize for RUINED (2009) and SWEAT (2017) By The Way, Meet Vera Stark: Online ProgramPrintable PDF Version of Program (13 pages)

Crimes of the Heart

Apr 14,15 @ 8pm, Apr 16 @ 2pm&8pm
Apr 21,22,23 @8pm
Apr 23,24 @2pm

Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Stagecrafters Theater must cancel the April 8, 9, and 10 performances of Crimes of the Heart. The revised opening performance will be April 14, with an added performance at 2pm Saturday April 16.  The run will continue through April 24.  It is the year 1976 in a small provincial Mississippi town where we follow 24 hours in the lives of three sisters: Lenny, Meg, and Babe, young women who, like their mother before them, provoke gossip and disapproval from the town’s leading citizens. The whirlwind events of those 24 hours brings these women more notoriety than ever before, but may actually change their lives and the way they see themselves. This black comedy, though stretching to the bizarre and gruesome at times, is in fact not only very funny, but also warm, insightful, and deeply human. Dateline: Paris, 1793, during the Reign of Terror − the time when a death sentence and the guillotine became the norm. Olympe de Gouge, author and activist, is trying to write a play about the French Revolution from a woman’s point of view. In this effort she is advised, prodded, and spurred on by three brassy, impatient, and insistent women: Marianne (a black rebel from the Caribbean), Charlotte Corday (a gutsy, single-minded assassin), and Marie-Antoinette (ex-Queen of France). This historical fantasy is a passionate, raucous, irreverent, and often hilarious anthem for four female voices, striving to be heard over the man-run horror show that they see around them. … As Marie Antoinette puts it: “Sometimes a revolution needs a woman’s touch”.
